Looking Good: Tips for Menopause
Menopause is the time of life when our skin starts to dry out and lose its elasticity. But that’s not the only problem; our skin also becomes very thin due to the progesterone and estrogen levels in our bodies changing. So perhaps one of the best things we can do to keep looking good is slap on plenty of high quality moisturizer.
Keep to the gentle, chemical free lotions wherever possible, as dry thin skin can be acutely sensitive. You may notice that you burn more easily too, so a sunscreen is imperative. When taking a shower or bath, be extra kind to your skin and keep the water warm, not hot and reduce the time spent in the shower. A long time in really hot water is very drying to skin that is already suffering.
It will help your skin if you add natural oils to your diet. This can come from coconut, fish or flaxseed, and if you add antioxidants too, it will also help slow the aging process. Lips are likely to dry out quickly, so keep a lip balm in your purse and use it frequently. Throw out any lipstick that dries your lips out.
Exercise is good for skin tone and if you are able, a bit of light weight lifting will help to keep the flab on your arms to a minimum. A brisk walk for twenty minutes a day is also extremely beneficial to general health.
When coloring your hair, choose a soft shade rather than something harsh like red or black, because your skin will be enhanced by a softer shade. Follow the same rule with cosmetics. What you wore ten years ago may not suit you now.
During menopause women often suffer from hot flashes, so it will help to wear clothes made from natural fibers that breathe, rather than man-made fibers that keep the heat against your skin. Some fibers increase your feeling of heat because they encourage perspiration - and then trap it so it cannot evaporate. When shopping for clothes, take your daughter or granddaughter with you. They’ll stop you from becoming too old-fashioned in what you wear.
Cooling drinks such as iced tea rather than hot coffee may also help you feel good. Making sure your nutrition is good and rest is plentiful will also help you to both look and feel good.
Menopausal women often suffer from lack of motivation, but if you make that extra effort to look good, then you’ll feel better about yourself and sail through other challenges that may occur.
