Posture and Poise - How to Make the Best Impression with Body Language

You may not think too much about body language, but it is possible to make a good impression - or a bad one simply by using it. Body language can tell people whether you are confident and poised or if you are nervous and lack self-esteem. Since most of us want to make a good impression on our friends, colleagues or boss, it’s a good idea to watch our body language.

One thing we should never do when talking to another person is cross our arms over our chest. This gives a guarded or nervous appearance rather than that friendly, in-control look. Some say legs should never be crossed either, but crossing them below the knee is fine and looks rather elegant. If you notice celebrities being interviewed on TV, many cross their legs below the knee.

Staring is a no-no in body language, but you should certainly make eye contact often. When it’s time to look away, don’t do it in a jerky manner as this gives the appearance of being nervous and even dishonest. Keep your head up, with shoulders and back straight, but relaxed. Slouching will give the appearance of laziness or a don’t-care attitude.

If you want someone to be sure that you are listening, nod occasionally while they talk, but don’t overdo it. Lean forward, but don’t encroach on their space. Most people like to keep a bit of personal space between them and others. If you invade this it will make them nervous or uncomfortable. If you see a person step back while you are talking to them, it is a sign that you were too close.

Many people touch their face while talking to others. It may be okay to brush off that stray hair that’s tickling, but don’t keep on rubbing at your face or hair, and don’t cover your mouth when laughing. Many people do this and there is no good reason for it. It only makes you look embarrassed.

Some people have a habit of jiggling their leg while talking, or drumming their fingers on the table or armrest. This is quite distracting to others and will prevent them from focusing on what you are saying. Another bad habit is to hold your drink in front of your chest or to drink while someone is talking to you. Always hold your drink down lower; near your leg is good. And if you are talking and drinking, wait until no one is talking to you before taking a sip.

When walking, assume a confident heads-up pose. Experts tell us that muggers tend to pick on those people who walk with their head down. Anyway, if you’ve got your head up, you won’t bump into anything.
